Description
Zinc aids over 200 activities that occur in your body either directly or indirectly. Proper assimilation of vitamins and other nutrients, normal growth and development in pregnancy, childhood and teens, and maintenance of body tissues and proteins at all ages are just a sampling of its influences. Other activities include: sexual function, immune system support, natural detoxification, wound healing, proper sense of taste and smell, and synthesis of DNA. It is an anti-oxidant. It influences blood sugar levels. Furthermore, it is a key part of 100 or so enzymes.*^
Moisture in the eyes, lungs, nose, urine, and saliva and all other body fluids contain Zinc. Therefore it is in all the fluids as they move through the body. Because it is in all the fluids in the body, it is quickly and easily available for any of its many functions. For example, our natural defense system uses Zinc, and in an ionic form it is consequently readily available for use by that system.*^
One published research report** says that a daily intake of Zinc is required to maintain a steady state because the body has no specialized zinc storage system. Other sources say that the thyroid, pancreas, liver, kidneys, bones, voluntary muscles, prostate, sperm, skin, hair, nails, white blood corpuscles and several parts of the eyes provide storage for Zinc. With as many places that it is used, it would seem better to supply it daily than risk running short.*^
